SOA PAF & ASF – Pre-Actuarial Foundations and Actuarial Science Foundations

Build Strong Foundations in Actuarial Professionalism, Risk Management, Business Applications and Professional Communication

Pre-Actuarial Foundations (PAF) and Actuarial Science Foundations (ASF) are two e-learning modules offered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), USA, as part of the educational pathway towards the Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation.

Together, these modules introduce the professional responsibilities of an actuary and develop the practical skills required to apply actuarial concepts to real-world business problems.

PAF focuses on actuarial professionalism, the role of actuaries, financial security systems, communication, emotional intelligence and professional development.

ASF builds upon these foundations and focuses on the Actuarial Control Cycle, external business influences, actuarial problem-solving, modelling, assumptions and solution development.

The combined course develops professional judgement, risk assessment, business analysis, actuarial modelling and communication skills, preparing students for practical actuarial work and further professional assessments.

Course Structure & Syllabus

The combined PAF and ASF course covers two complementary areas of actuarial education: professional foundations and practical actuarial applications.

Key Topics Covered:

  1. Introduction to the Actuarial Profession:
History and development of actuarial science, professional responsibilities, areas of actuarial practice, financial security systems and the role of actuaries in managing uncertainty.
  2. Actuarial Professionalism & Ethical Conduct:
Professional standards, ethical decision-making, stakeholder responsibilities, professional judgement and actuarial codes of conduct.
  3. Actuarial Control Cycle & Risk Management:

  4. Effective Communication & Emotional Intelligence:

  5. External Forces & Business Environment:
Economic conditions, regulatory frameworks, government policies, demographic changes, social factors and environmental influences affecting actuarial decisions.
  6. Actuarial Modelling & Solution Design:
Identifying data requirements, selecting appropriate actuarial models, developing assumptions, evaluating alternatives and designing solutions to business problems.
  7. Model Validation & Professional Decision-Making:
Evaluating modelling results, testing assumptions, identifying limitations, validating calculations and communicating appropriate actuarial recommendations.

The combined syllabus focuses on actuarial professionalism, risk management, the Actuarial Control Cycle, modelling, communication and professional decision-making.

Syllabus Topics Covered

The SOA PAF and ASF modules are organised into six principal learning areas.

Module Topic Principal Focus
