๐ CAT โ Common Admission Test (MBA Entrance Examination)
Your Gateway to India’s Leading Management Institutes
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of India’s most prominent national-level management entrance examinations, conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
CAT is primarily used for admission to Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Post Graduate Programme (PGP) courses offered by the IIMs and several other leading business schools across India.
The examination evaluates candidates’ abilities in Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, focusing on analytical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and time management.
CAT is suitable for graduates, final-year undergraduate students and working professionals aspiring to pursue higher education in management, finance, consulting, marketing, operations and related fields.

Scoring and Percentile System
Unlike professional examinations, CAT does not have a universal passing percentage.
Candidates are evaluated through their overall and sectional performance, with results expressed in scores and percentiles.
Understanding CAT Percentiles:
- 90 Percentile: Performance above approximately 90% of candidates.
- 95 Percentile: Performance above approximately 95% of candidates.
- 99 Percentile: Performance above approximately 99% of candidates.
CAT scores may undergo normalisation across examination sessions to account for differences in difficulty.
Individual business schools establish their own overall and sectional percentile cut-offs, which may vary depending on the programme, admission category and selection criteria.
๐๏ธ MBA Admission Process
CAT scores are accepted by the IIMs and numerous other management institutions, including selected programmes at FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR Mumbai and other participating business schools.
The admission process may include:
- CAT overall and sectional percentile evaluation
- Academic performance in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation
- Work experience and academic diversity
- Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) or other assessments, where applicable
- Personal Interview (PI)
The final selection criteria vary by institution, and a high CAT percentile alone does not guarantee admission.
๐ Build Strong Management Aptitude
CAT evaluates essential capabilities required for advanced management education, including analytical reasoning, numerical proficiency, reading comprehension, data interpretation and decision-making under time constraints.
A strong command of these areas helps candidates approach competitive management entrance examinations with greater confidence and prepares them for the academic rigour of MBA and postgraduate management programmes.
CAT is not simply a test of knowledgeโit is an assessment of analytical ability, logical thinking, accuracy and effective decision-making.
