Navigating the New IFoA Exam Format: Key Changes to Know

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) has introduced significant changes to its examination structure, effective from the April 2025 session. These adjustments aim to enhance the security, fairness, and integrity of the examination process. If you’re preparing for the upcoming exams, it’s essential to understand these changes and adapt your preparation strategies accordingly. Here’s everything you need to know about the new IFoA exam format.

$\quad 1)$ Remote Invigilation for Enhanced Security

One of the most prominent changes is the implementation of remote invigilation. Candidates will now access the exam platform via a secure browser that monitors their activity throughout the exam. Additionally, during the onboarding process, candidates must present a valid photo ID (driving license or passport) to verify their identity. This ensures a fair and standardized process for all participants.

$\quad 2)$ Transition to Closed Book Exams

The new format prohibits access to external resources during the examination. This includes:

$\bullet \quad$ Books

$\bullet \quad$ Handwritten notes

$\bullet \quad$ Documents stored on your computer

$\bullet \quad$ Internet browsing (you cannot open any browser other than IFoA’s browser)

$\bullet \quad$ You cannot have tablets, smart watches, headphones, USB devices, or cameras in the exam room.

Candidates are expected to rely solely on their knowledge and skills during the exam. However, the use of scrap paper for note-taking is permitted, providing some flexibility for calculations and brainstorming. You can carry two blank A4 sheets. You can have a mobile phone in the exam room but it should be out of your reach.

$\quad 3)$ Standardized Exam Start Times

In the interest of fairness, all candidates will now start their exams simultaneously. The previous system of staggered start times is being replaced to ensure that no participant has prior access to exam content. This change emphasizes equality and consistency across the board.

$\quad 4)$ Restriction to Single Monitor Usage

Candidates are limited to using a single monitor during the examination. This measure prevents distractions and potential misuse of multiple screens, ensuring a focused and fair testing environment for everyone.

$\quad 5)$ Scheduled Breaks During the Exam

To support candidates’ well-being, the IFoA now allows for two five-minute breaks during the exam. You will have to announce that you are taking a break before your camera if and when you take a break.

Preparing for Success in the New Format

With these changes in place, it’s crucial to adjust your study and preparation strategies:

$\bullet \quad$ Practice under closed-book conditions to simulate the actual exam environment.

$\bullet \quad$ Familiarize yourself with the secure browser setup and remote invigilation process.

$\bullet \quad$ Ensure your workstation complies with the single-monitor requirement.

$\bullet \quad$ Plan for breaks during practice sessions to manage time effectively.

Conclusion

These changes reflect the IFoA’s dedication to maintaining the credibility and value of its qualifications. By understanding and adapting to these modifications, you can approach your exams with confidence and clarity.
